REVIEW: Webley MK VI .455 Revolver Air Pistol

This replica air pistol is manufactured to exacting specifications by Webley & Scott, a company steeped in its own storied air pistol history dating back to the early 20th century. The original Webley Mk VI self-extracting revolver was used by British troops throughout WWI and WWII. The Webley was distinguished by its 6-inch, flat-sided barrel, its large hammer spur, copious triggerguard and large, crescent-shaped DA/SA trigger and the markings are as the original 1915 markings. A man-sized handgun overbuilt to endure, it used a massive stirrup latch to release the barrel and cylinder assembly, allowing it to be tilted downward like the old S&W top-break revolvers. Opening the Webley activated an automatic ejector working off an external cam lever on the left side of the frame. This drove the cylinder arbor and extractor upward and simultaneously expelled all six shell cases.

All of these features are accurately reproduced from original blueprints in the Webley Mk VI air pistol, with the exception of completely ejecting the unique .455-caliber BB cartridges, which can be reloaded and used repeatedly. Weighing in at 37 ounces, measuring an exact 11.25 inches in length and 5.75 inches in height, the Mk VI air pistol is as close to the original Webley revolver as possible.

Webley MK VI in Hollywood

The iconic Webley Mark revolver was a mainstay for British troops during WWI. In fact, you've probably seen the firearm in movies such as "Lawrence of Arabia," "Flame Over India," Indiana Jones series, "Zulu" and "Zulu Dawn."

5Does what I want and need.
By DNwilson
I like this air gun. I had a very specific use for it in mind when I bought it and it has more that lived up to my expectations. Obviously, getting a really Webley from that era would be prohibitively expensive and the .455 ammo would be even harder to get. The only thing that is missing it the recoil which I did not care about.

It is accurate with good bb's. If you buy cheapies, then you can expect some fliers. It is not an AIRSOFT pistol, meaning that is should not be used to shoot at targets that can be harmed. My goal was to try out the ideas on shooting that are discussed the the book about Webley revolvers in the weapon series. This is a very good and affordable substitute for the real thing. The life for a CO2 cartridge is quite good, about 70 shots for me. I think that you could use this to get rid of rodents if you needed to.

5Good value in a proper replica air pistol-The Webley MK6 BB Revolver
By J.L. Jameson
Very nice air pistol, very well detailed and finished for this price point. Amazon and Air Gun Depot have a winner in this category on their hands with the Webley MK6! The pistol is of the proper weight and appearance and has a nice smooth action. While not the original wooden grips on this replica, I do appreciate how easy it is to remove the left plastic grip for installation of CO2 cartridges. I especially enjoyed the replica vintage British Army field manual for the Webley pistol that came packaged with this air pistol. Sometimes it is the little touches that make a significant difference. The pistol came in it's sealed original box with accessories and very well packed for shipping. I recommend the Webley MK6 for anyone purchasing their first air pistol and for those that appreciate the effort expended here to supply a quality replica which operates as closely to the original as possible. Oh, and buy it here from Amazon and Air Gun Depot!

5Very nicely designed CO2 hand gun
By HappyCamper
Very nicely designed CO2 hand gun. Good weight! The only con is the grips could be made of a higher quality plastic, like the Gletcher NGT uses. However Minus that one thing, I am very happy with it! Good job!

History behind the firearm that inspired the Webley Mk VI Air Pistol

In 1887, the British Army was searching for a revolver to replace the largely unsatisfactory .476 Enfield Mk I & Mk II Revolvers, the Enfield having only replaced the solid frame Adams .450 revolver which was a late 1860s conversion of the cap and ball Beaumon Adams revolver in 1880. Webley & Scott, who were already very well known makers of quality guns and had sold many pistols on a commercial basis to military officers and civilians alike, tendered the .455 calibre Webley Self-Extracting Revolver for trials. The military was suitably impressed with the revolver (it was seen as a vast improvement over the Enfield revolvers then in service, which American designed Owen extraction system did not prove particularly satisfactory in service), and it was adopted on 8 November 1887 as the "Pistol, Webley, Mk I".

There were six different marks of .455 calibre Webley British Government Model revolvers approved for British military service at various times between 1887 and the end of the First World War. The Mk I, Mk II, Mk IV, Mk V and Mk VI which is similar to the Mk V, but with a squared-off "target" style grip (as opposed to the "bird's-beak" style found on earlier marks and models) and a 6-inch (150 mm) barrel. Officially adopted 24 May 1915

Webley Mk VI at War

The standard-issue Webley revolver at the outbreak of the First World War was the Webley Mk V (adopted 9 December 1913), but there were considerably more Mk IV revolvers in service in 1914, as the initial order for 20,000 Mk V revolvers had not been completed when hostilities began. On 24 May 1915, the Webley Mk VI was adopted as the standard sidearm for British and Commonwealth troops and remained so for the duration of the First World War, being issued to officers, airmen, naval crews, boarding parties, trench raiders, machine-gun teams, and tank crews. The Mk VI proved to be a very reliable and hardy weapon, well suited to the mud and adverse conditions of trench warfare, and several accessories were developed for the Mk VI, including a bayonet (made from a converted French Gras bayonet), speedloader devices (the "Prideaux Device" and the Watson design), and a stock allowing for the revolver to be converted into a carbine.
