REVIEW: Umarex Walther CP88 Air Pistols (4" and 6" Models)

This non-blowback replica air pistol features a frame-mounted thumb safety, rear sights that are adjustable for windage, contoured wood grips, serrated slide assembly and it comes in both 4" and 6" inch rifled steel barrels. The Umarex Walther CP88 is s new generation of fully licensed Walther C02 air pistols. The original Walther design as well as the outstanding workmanship are impressive. This 8-shot double and single action repeater represents a giant leap forward in CO2 pistol technology because it's both fast and easy to reload with the convenient 8-shot rotary magazines that can be preloaded until you're ready to shoot. The rear part of the slide doesn’t move at all, there is of course no blowback and controls like the magazine release and takedown lever have a different function here. It also does not have a drop-out magazine and it cannot be stripped or disassembled without tools.

The CO2 is retained in a compartment within the grip in the CP88 and this is opened by pressing what looks like a magazine release on the left side. This releases the left grip and gives access to the CO2 chamber. What looks like the base of the magazine is actually a hinged panel which is opened downwards to move the CO2 retaining seat down. A CO2 cartridge is then placed inside and a thumbwheel is used for initial tightening. When the CO2 is snugly seated, the base of the magazine is closed upwards to complete piercing and sealing. It’s an exceptionally neat system which loads CO2 without drama or leaks, though it works best if the hinged panel is closed firmly and sharply rather than tentatively.

The CP88 is hefty, chunky and solid. Just like the firearm it replicates. Very few replicas feel as much like a cartridge firing weapon when you pick them up. In fact, some modern replicas feel undeniably toy like. In contrast, the CP88 feels like a "real" gun. The CP88 comes competition polished, blued with wood grips. The foam-lined plastic gun case includes a speedloader and two 8-shot rotary magazines. It is a popular gun for beginners and training purposes.

5You get more value than you pay for if you buy this .177 cal pellet pistol.
By James M. Stewart
This is an excellent medium velocity pellet pistol for use in basement ranges all winter long. Don't expect to send lead wadcutters through stiff soup cans at 30 feet, but at that distance, if you miss a can like that, it's your fault and not the pistol's. There is a pellet length restriction on pellets that can be used in this pistol's rotary eight shot magazines. For paper target practice I use Diablo wadcutters that have functioned flawlessly for over 600 shots so far. I just wish this CP88 was still available in 'stainless' finish.

History behind the firearm that inspired the Umarex Walther CP88 Air Pistol

The Walther P88 is a semiautomatic pistol developed by the Walther company of Germany in 1988, hence the model name P88. Its main feature is a high-capacity double-stacked magazine designed for military and law enforcement use. In 1996, Walther discontinued the pistol in favour of the slightly lighter and smaller P88 Compact, which was also cheaper to manufacture. The Walther P88 is highly prized among collectors and sport shooters due to its superb accuracy (40 to 50 mm [1.5 to 2 in] groups at 20 m [25 yd]) and high-quality construction. Lighter and a bit smaller with only minor differences.

P88 Compact: The standard Walther P88 was heavily criticised for being bulky, heavy and expensive; the Compact solved none of these issues. There were many complaints about the full-size model's slide stop as well. It was thought to be hard to reach and manipulate, requiring the user to shift the gun in hand to operate. This was corrected with the P88 Compact at the expense of losing a very popular feature: its unique combination ambidextrous decocker and slide release. It was replaced with a CZ 99-style combination decocker and conventional slide stop/release. This allowed the pistol to function as a DAO (double action only) or conventional DA/SA.

Both these pistols are fully ambidextrous with the exception of the compact's slide stop/release. Full ambidextrous control was an industry first and the original P88 likely would have sold well were it not for the high cost. Both models remain collectible.
